OTAGO DAILY TIMES FUNHOUSE has presented some good material on this album which fans will have probably rushed to purchase. Tracks UP A TREE and I DON'T MIND stand out, but they all have a rock-pop appeal. CHRISTCHURCH PRESS Accessable, danceable guitar music influenced as much by Liverpool (THE BEATLES) as the 'Dunedin Sound' of an earlier era, especially STRAITJACKET FITS. They are talented, capable musicians with a knack for writing chorus-driven pop songs. PUSHED, WHERE THE WIND BLOWS and AFTER THIS show best the vocal harmonies. The slightly agitated MAZE and CIRCLES, with a clattering, stop-start delivery, do strive for attention.
ROY is melody and soundscapes for overactive lives, intended to stimulate - a bursting floodgate of tunes and talent. The instant hooks and crashing guitars of I'LL TURN AWAY, CIRCLES and UP A TREE mix it up with a touch of psychedelia on PUSHED and the great schmaltz pop of I DON'T MIND to overflow an excellent album from this Dunedin foursome. PAVEMENT : Mark Amery Surprise! A pop rock band from Dunedin that attempts to be nothing but that. No serious Southern intentions with these chaps, just a whole lot of fun that lives up to the name. With clean, light treatment they play overtly flashy guitar with a nod to 70's glam. This is a bunch of punchy numbers that would be bubblegum pop if not for some very good tunes. As close to Disney as Dunedin gets. NZ MUSICIAN : Tony Parker ROY opens with the energetic guitar noise of MAZE which thrashes about in a convincing manner and recalls earlier HUSKER DU. Elsewhere songwriters McLean and Grant explore their pop sensibilities on LET IT LIE with it's harmonies and I DON'T MIND. |
